Military Time - Calculator
Displays current local and universal time in military time, and converts a 12-hour clock to military time. Military time is written in 24-hour format without a colon. If the hour is a single-digit number, a leading zero is placed in front. A J after the time means Juliett and stands for local time, Z means Zulu time and stands for universal time UTC.
| Current local time (your system time): |
| Current universal time (world time) UTC: |
Example: 3:30 p.m. corresponds to 15:30 in the 24-hour format, written as military time this is 1530. On the other hand, 3:30 a.m. in the morning or at night is 0330 in military time.
Military time is often pronounced as, for example, five hundred for 0500, fourteen hundred for 1400, and twenty-one hundred for 2100. This is, of course, mathematically incorrect, since the hour has 60 minutes, not 100. However, if the minutes have a value other than zero, the pronunciation is often mathematically correct, such as sixteen thirty for 1630.
The purpose of military time is to provide a clear time reference in a form that eliminates misunderstandings as much as possible. The 12-hour notation is particularly prone to misunderstandings, which can lead to embarrassing or even catastrophic errors, and not just in military applications. The leading zero ensures that it is immediately clear whether the time has been transmitted completely or if something is missing. The colon between hours and minutes is omitted because it contains no necessary information. Specifying whether local time or universal time is important for operations across time zones, which also occur not only in the military. When multiple time zones need to be coordinated, using universal time is often advisable.
