Fraction of a Time Span - Calculator
A small program to calculate the fraction of a time span in years, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds. One tenth (1/10) is preset as a fraction, this can of course be changed. The fraction can also be entered in the form of a decimal fraction. Please enter a period of time, the length of the corresponding fraction will be calculated. One year is calculated as 365.2421875 days, which is the length of an average year. The output can be done with or without weeks, depending on the selection. Both formats are commonly used.
Example: one twelfth of a year is 4 weeks, 2 days, 10 hours, 29 minutes, 3.7525 seconds. Without the weeks, it is 30 days, 10 hours, 11 minutes and 31.8525 seconds. Both periods have of course the same length.
If a fraction is entered, the corresponding decimal fraction is calculated. This makes it easier to imagine its size. If a decimal fraction is entered, however, the fields for fractions are deleted. The reason for this is quite simple: converting a decimal fraction into a real fraction can very often produce very confusing results.
Calculating a fraction is a division. Dividing time is therefore particularly laborious because it is not decimal (in steps of tens and hundreds) but works with 60 (seconds and minutes), 24 (hours of a day), 7 (days of a week) and a completely skewed number for the days or weeks of a year. Trying to calculate this without any tools is very laborious and also very prone to errors.
If you want to divide a specific period of time, i.e. from one date to another, into equal-length sections and need the start and end dates for each section, then this page can be helpful: Scheduler for periodically recurring dates.
