Calculate Mean Value of Time Spans
Calculator for the mean or average of up to ten different time data in days, hours, minutes and seconds. Please enter of how many time spans you want to calculate the mean. Then enter at least one value for each time span. So for time 1, either days, hours, minutes, or seconds, or more than one of these. Then do the same for time 2 and each subsequent time span. If nothing is entered in a row, that time span is counted as zero.
Examples: the average of 30 minutes and 90 minutes is one hour (120 minutes divided by 2). If you add a third time of zero length, then the average drops to 40 minutes (120 minutes divided by 3).
If you have four times with lengths of two days for time 1, three hours for time 2, four minutes for time 3, and five seconds for time 4, the average for these times is 12 hours, 46 minutes, and 1.25 seconds.
There are several different means; the one calculated here is the arithmetic mean, colloquially known as the average. It is calculated by adding all the values together and then dividing this sum by the number of values.
In the case of times, each time is first converted into one unit; conveniently, this is the shortest unit used here, namely seconds. After dividing, the result is converted back to the individual units. Using the values from the second example, we get 172800 plus 10800 plus 240 plus 5 seconds, for a total of 183845 seconds. Divided by 4, this gives 45961.25 seconds. This value divided by 3600 seconds for one hour gives us 12 hours, with a remainder of 2761.25 seconds. This value divided by 60 seconds gives us 46 minutes, with a remainder of 1.25 seconds. So, division with remainder is required for this calculation.
