Octagons as a base for containers or vessels are rather unusual. This shape is more likely chosen for decorative purposes than for practical reasons. In architecture, however, it is relatively common. There are several significant historical buildings with an octagonal floor plan. And buildings are, after all, a type of container in which things are housed. In such structures, this floor plan is generally a regular octagon, meaning one in which all sides have the same length. The reason for this is that regular shapes symbolize perfection. Therefore, this floor plan is found particularly in ancient religious buildings. The first known structure of this type is the Tower of the Winds in Athens from the first century BC. This floor plan can also be found in famous buildings such as the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, Aachen Cathedral, and Castel del Monte in Italy.
Octagonal prisms cannot be stacked without gaps, unlike regular hexagonal prisms like honeycombs.
