Convert Liters and Kilos

Conversion of content in liters to mass in kilograms via density. Kilo means thousand and is colloquial for kilogram, which is 1000 grams. For water, one liter corresponds to one kilogram, other materials are lighter or heavier. Density is a measure of how much mass is in a volume, as a unit here kilograms per liter is used.

Material:

Volume:liters
Density:kg/l
Mass:kilos

Please select a material and enter volume or mass, or enter two of the three values to calculate the third. There are of course more materials than can be found here in this selection.

Volume refers to content or spatial capacity. This is a three-dimensional quantity, calculated as length times width times height. A liter is a cubic decimeter, the most commonly used unit for volume in household use.

Density is an important property of matter; it describes how heavy objects of a certain size are. Heavyness is to be understood colloquially here, as a synonym for mass. The density of substances changes with temperature and pressure; generally, it increases with lower temperatures and higher pressures. Water is an exception here; liquid water has its greatest density at 4 degrees Celsius, which is called the density anomaly of water. However, the fluctuation in density is negligible for many common applications where exact values are not required.
The densities of the various materials given here refer to standard conditions, i.e., 20 degrees Celsius and 1013 millibars of air pressure. They therefore provide good approximations for the ranges in which we normally find ourselves.

Mass is often equated with weight or gravity, but they are not the same thing. Mass indicates "how much" something is; weight indicates the gravitational pull exerted on it. Weight, therefore, depends on where the object is located. For us, this is almost always on Earth. Weight is measured in newtons; on Earth, one kilogram has a gravitational force of 9.81 newtons. See the kilogram-to-newton calculator for more information.
