Calculate Liters in a Can

Calculator how many liters fit in a can of a certain size or what size the can needs to be.

Mathematically, a can is a cylinder. The size of the can is precisely determined by specifying the diameter and height, the volume results from the square of half the diameter times the height times the circle number pi, i.e. radius² x height x π. Here, too, the distances inside the can must be measured if the can wall has a notable thickness.

Can 15 cm diameter, 10 cm height

Example: a can with a diameter of 15 cm and a height of 10 cm has a content of almost 1.8 liters.

Please enter any two values. This can be the diameter and height of the can or one of these values and the volume. The third value will be calculated.

Diameter:cm
Height:cm
Volume:liters

Tin can

This tin can has a diameter of 10 cm and a height of 11.5 cm, so it can hold a maximum of 0.9 liters (5² * 11.5 * 3.1415927 / 1000). According to the manufacturer, it contained 800 milliliters of soup.

A can or tin is often used for preserved food, in this case it is sometimes called a tin can. The cylinder is a common shape for canned goods, but not the only one. Cans are made of stainless metal; their name 'tin' refers to the metal tin, which tin cans are often coated with.
A mug or cup often has the same shape. Another container in this shape is a tube, although this one is open on both sides. The volume is still the same. Then there are objects called cylinders, such as a hat or the combustion chamber in an internal combustion engine; their volume can also be calculated in the same way.
Cans can often be stacked on top of each other; many are designed with a ring on top that has a slightly larger diameter than the bottom, so they fit snugly together without slipping. When cylindrical objects are placed next to each other, gaps appear.
