Compare Time Spans
A calculator for comparing the lengths of two time spans. Please enter at both time spans month, day and year and, if needed, also hours and minutes, in 24-hours-format. Incorrect specifications will be corrected, e.g. April 31. will become May 1. The absolute length of each time span will be calculated and how many times one time span is longer than the other. If you press Calculate before entering values, the current day and the next three days at midnight will be preset.
A time span is the time difference between two dates, each with a date and time. The time span is always positive. So it is calculated by subtracting the earlier date from the later date. If a time field is left blank, it is set to 0:00, midnight, the beginning of the day. If a date field is blank, it is set to the current date. If two fields are blank, the first is set to the current date and the second to the date one day later. This continues if three or four days are blank.
The duration of each time span is calculated in days, hours, and minutes, also the difference between both. Then, the two spans are compared to determine how much longer one is compared to the other. Both ratios, span 1 to span 2 and span 2 to span 1, are displayed. Each value is the reciprocal of the other.
For example, if one time span runs from 6:23 today to 19:44 and the second from 19:45 today to 8:17 tomorrow, then the first lasts 1 hour and 21 minutes and the second 11 hours and 28 minutes. The difference is 1 hour and 53 minutes. Time span 1 is longer, namely 1.16 times as long as time period 2. Accordingly, time span 2 is 0.86 times as long.
