Calculator for the CO2 Emissions of a Radiator

The carbon dioxide emissions of a heating system or radiator operated with heating oil or natural gas can be calculated here. The factor indicates how much carbon dioxide is emitted per gram of heating oil or per cubic meter of natural gas. An average value is given here, this can be changed if a more precise value is present. At consumption, enter the individual quantity, for example the consumption of a household in one year. Then it will be calculated how much CO2 is generated for this amount.

Two values must be entered, the third value will be calculated.

Example: at a consumption of 800 liters of heating oil, the CO2 emissions are 2160 kilograms. 600 cubic meters of natural gas, which have roughly the same calorific value as 800 liters of heating oil, release 1200 kilograms of carbon dioxide. The difference in the CO2 balance between these two types of fuel is therefore quite noticeable and is in favor of natural gas. However, the latter is also anything but climate-neutral.

Oil and gas heating systems were installed in large quantities until the early years of the 21st century, although the damage they cause to the environment and climate has long been known. Environmentally friendly alternatives are, where available, geothermal energy and district heating, the latter only when it comes from clean sources. One option that is more often available is heating with electricity from renewable energies. However, electricity is usually more expensive than heating by combustion. This is why the heat pump is such a sophisticated way of heating, as it uses the energy put in to extract heat from the outside environment and thus achieves efficiencies of several hundred percent. Heat pumps are easier to implement in new buildings, but as technology advances they are also becoming more and more meaningful in older buildings (as of 2024).
