Emission Factor of Electric Current
Calculating with the emission factor of carbon dioxide in power generation. Factor, quantity or total emissions can be calculated. The emission factor indicates how many grams of CO2 are released when generating one kilowatt hour of electricity. This factor depends on the type of power generation. In the case of fossil fuels such as coal, the emission factor is far higher than with renewable energies such as solar and wind. The exact factor can be provided by the energy provider, for example.
Please enter two values, the third value will be calculated. The unit for the amount of electricity can be changed. Grams per kilowatt hour (g/kWh) is the same as kilograms per megawatt hour (kg/MWh), which is also what you occasionally read.
Example: in the German electricity mix for 2018, the average emission factor is around 472 grams of CO2 for one kilowatt hour of electricity. The average power consumption of a household is 3500 kWh/year. This released 1652 kilograms of CO2 per year and household in 2018. In 1990, the emission factor was 764 grams of CO2 per kWh; in 2023, the value was 380.
The emission factor can be specified not only for a mix, but also for individual energy sources. The worst value is for brown coal, with 1100 grams of CO2 per kilowatt hour of electricity generated. For black coal, the value is around 900, and for natural gas it is around 450. For photovoltaics, the value is 50 if one assumes that the corresponding modules are manufactured using electricity from the electricity mix. However, since the manufacture of these modules improves the electricity mix in the long term, one might as well assume 0 here. The same applies to wind power and hydropower, which have a factor of around 10 grams of CO2 per kWh even under unfavorable manufacturing conditions.
Here you can convert metric units into customary and imperial units.
