Calculator for the CO2 Emissions of Cars

Please enter the consumption of the car or motor vehicle and the type of fuel: petrol, diesel or Autogas (LPG). The CO2 emissions are calculated for a certain distance and per kilometer.

The car has a consumption of liters per 100 km.

At a distance of km, it produces CO2 emissions of kg.

Per kilometer, it produces grams of CO2.

Here, CO2 emissions of 2350 grams per liter of petrol, 2650 grams per liter of diesel and 1640 grams per liter of Autogas are assumed. CO2 is the chemical formula for carbon dioxide. The consumption of the car can be found in the operating instructions or in many cars read from the on-board computer. Or you can measure it yourself. Here is a consumption unit converter.

Example: a car with a fuel consumption of 5 liters per 100 kilometers emits 29.375 kilograms of CO2 over a distance of 250 kilometers.

CO2, carbon dioxide, is a greenhouse gas. It is not the most potent greenhouse gas per quantity, but it is the most common, so that overall it has the greatest influence of all greenhouse gases on the climate. Greenhouse gases are gases whose molecules consist of three or more atoms; in the case of CO2, there are exactly three, one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. Such molecules absorb infrared radiation, so they store heat. The more of these there are in the atmosphere, the more of the sun's radiation is stored and not reflected back into space. This heats up the atmosphere; this effect is known as the greenhouse effect, and it causes global warming, which leads to a greater number of natural disasters. Cars and vehicles with combustion engines contribute a large part to this, but of course there are other emitters too. The main global problem is the combustion of fossil fuels, these are mineral oil, coal and natural gas.
