Find Nearest Multiple
For a value and a divisor, the nearest multiple above and below will be calculated. If the value is evenly divisible by the divisor, then the multiple is the value itself. Value or divisor are usually integers, but decimal fractions can also be entered. Lower and upper multiples and their multipliers are output. The multiple closest to the value and its multiplier will be marked.
Example: if the value is 110 and the divisor is 8, the closer upper multiple is 112 with the multiplier 14 and the lower multiple is 104 with the multiplier 13.
This method is used in various applications, including technical, economic, and scientific calculations that require adjustments to fixed step sizes or intervals.
Typical use cases include:
Material cutting: Adjusting lengths to standard dimensions, for example, wooden slats to 30 cm increments or sheet metal plates to 25 cm increments, to minimize waste.
Production planning: Rounding quantities to pallet or carton sizes, such as 117 pieces to 120 pieces for a packaging unit of 15 pieces, to optimize logistics processes.
Time management: Adjusting working hours to 15- or 30-minute blocks to standardize processes and simplify billing.
Electronics: Setting resistance values or clock frequencies to available standard values, such as 470 Ω instead of 463 Ω, because only E-series resistors are available.
Construction: Adjusting dimensions to fit module grids, such as 62.5 cm instead of 61 cm, to ensure compatibility with standard components.
Financial planning: Rounding investment amounts to whole shares or contract sizes, for example, €2375 to €2400 with a minimum increment of €25, to reduce transaction costs.
Measurement technology: Adjusting measurement values to the resolution of a device, for example, from 8.6 V to 8.5 V with a step size of 0.5 V, to achieve consistent results.
