Calculator for the edge lengths of a cube, if its volume gets multiplied. Please enter for both cubes either edge length or volume. The other two values will be calculated .
Doubling the cube using only a compass and straightedge is a classic construction problem from ancient Greece, which has since been proven unsolvable. The construction would require a straight line with a length equal to the cube root of two, which is impossible because only straight lines with lengths based on square roots and fractions can be constructed. This limitation in the construction possibilities also applies to other ratios, such as tripling, since the cube root of three cannot be derived in this way either. However, multiplying the cube by eight is possible, since the cube root of eight equals two, a natural number. In this case, the edge lengths simply have to be doubled. Also possible is a doubling of the square.
Mathematically speaking, every operation with a compass and straightedge corresponds to a quadratic equation. With additional tools besides the compass and straightedge, such a construction is indeed possible. One such tool could be a mark on a ruler, a so-called neusis construction. Of course, the problem can also be approached computationally, as this calculator does. The representation of decimal fractions allows for an arbitrary degree of accuracy, but not an exact degree.
