Data Transfer: Time | Speed | Size | Start End Time | Compression | Binary Prefixes | Percent | Baud

Calculate Data Transfer Speed

Calculate data transfer speed. Enter data size and transfer time and click Calculate. The output is in Mbps, which are megabits per second.

Data size:

Transfer time: h min s

Transfer speed:

For example, if a 3.5 gigabyte file was transferred in 24 minutes, the average transfer speed was 19.4444 Mbps.

The transfer speed can vary, so the calculated speed is an average value. Time can be entered like 1 min 40 s or like 100 s. The conversion factor for the prefixes is 1000, e.g. 1 GB = 1000 MB.

The transmission speed of course depends heavily on the transmission method used. There are essentially two methods for wired transmission: copper cables and fiber optic cables. Copper conducts electricity very well, data here is transmitted via electrical current. With this technology, several Gbps are theoretically possible; 1 Gbps is calculated as 1000 Mbps in this case. In practice, transfer speed is up to 250 Mbps, but usually much less, because electrical signals are subject to interference and loss, the longer and older the cable, the more likely this is. With fiber optic cables, even Tbps, or millions of Mbps, are theoretically possible. With light transmission, there are no interference or losses as long as the cable is intact; the transmission speed is usually deliberately reduced, often depending on the chosen tariff.
Transmission through air using radio waves is slower, but no cable needs to be laid. Mobile communications and Wi-Fi can theoretically reach several Gbps (as of 2025), but in practice, they usually reach up to a few hundred Mbps. The distance to the transmitter (cell tower or router) and obstacles in the path play a major role here.
A limiting factor for all these transmission types is network load, i.e., how much other data needs to be transmitted to other users simultaneously over the same network.
