Calculate Percent of a Data Volume

Calculator for the percentage of data with a given size in kB, MB, Gb, TB, as well as kiB, MiB, GiB or TiB. These abbreviations stand for a certain amount of bytes. A prefix, like M for Mega, indicates the magnitude of bytes B. Please enter a data volume and a percentage and select the two units. The percentual value will be calculated.

Data volume:
Percent:
Transmitted volume:

Round to    decimal places.

Example: data with a volume of 5 GiB is transferred to 23 percent. So a transfer of 1177.6 MiB is carried out so far. In contrast, 23 percent of 5 GB is 1150 MB. This is because the conversion factor from MB to GB is 1000, but from MiB to GiB it is 1024.

One percent is one hundredth. Percentages are often used for values that can range from 0 to a certain upper limit. This is also the case here. The upper limit is the total size of the data to be transferred. The transferred amount is smaller or equal than the total amount and is in a ratio between 0 and 1 to it. This ratio multiplied by 100 gives the percentage value. Expressing a value as a percentage is generally understood, common, and easy to visualize. Converting to absolute units is more difficult, especially when these are based on a binary conversion, i.e., using a factor of 1024. It is important to note that units with the i, such as MiB, are hardly known, but units without the i, such as MB, are sometimes incorrectly used for them. A reliable way to express the absolute size would be in bits, but then the numbers become very large and unwieldy. Therefore, in many cases, the percentage is the more important value, even if it contains less information.
Furthermore, the use of percentages avoids the problem of inconsistency between decimal and binary prefixes, which can lead to misunderstandings, especially with storage media, data transfers, or system utilization, since manufacturers often specify decimal units (GB), while operating systems and applications frequently use binary units (GiB), which explains apparent discrepancies in capacity specifications.
