Calculate Distance in Nautical Miles and Kilometers
Distance calculator for routes as they are measured on the high seas. There, distances are traditionally measured in nautical miles, with one nautical mile originally defined as one-sixtieth of a degree of latitude. The nautical mile is also called a sea mile. Today, the nautical mile is defined as exactly 1852 meters, which is slightly less than one-sixtieth of a degree of latitude. The land mile, or simply mile, officially the statute mile, is 1609.344 meters long.
Here you can convert between nautical miles, land miles, kilometers, and meters. Simply enter one value, and the other three values will be calculated.
For example, the distance from Gibraltar at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula to the Suez Canal in Egypt, which is across the Mediterranean Sea, is approximately 2100 nautical miles, depending on the chosen route. This corresponds to 3889.2 kilometers. Using the ship speed calculator, with an average speed of 20 knots, it can be calculated that the journey takes 4 days and 9 hours.
The speed unit knot is directly derived from the nautical mile. It denotes nautical miles per hour. It functions in the same way as the Anglo-American speed unit miles per hour and the international unit kilometers per hour. This calculator can therefore convert knots to km/h or mph just as it converts nautical miles to kilometers or land miles. This works even though the calculator formally refers to distances and not speeds. However, when comparing two speeds in distance per hour, the same time unit cancels out.
Referring to the example above, 20 knots is equivalent to 37 kilometers per hour or 23 miles per hour. This speed is typical for modern merchant ships and cruise ships. Ferries often travel even faster and frequently reach speeds of over 25 knots.
