Grip strength measures how firmly a person can grasp and squeeze with their hand. It is considered a good indicator of general physical performance and is linked to overall health. Grip strength naturally changes with age. On average, men have greater grip strength than women. Height and weight also play a minor role. The dominant hand, the right hand for right-handed people and the left for left-handed people, is usually slightly stronger than the other.
This calculator is designed for the 6 to 99 age range. No reference values exist outside this range. Age and gender must be specified. Height and weight are optional, with average values used if they are not provided. Grip strength can be entered in kilograms (kg), pounds (lb), or newtons (N). While kg and lb are the units commonly used in this context, N is the physically correct unit for force.
If no grip strength value is entered, only the reference value, that is average strength for the respective reference group is calculated. If a grip strength value is provided in one unit, the force is converted into the other units and classified. The score is a calculated assessment of grip strength relative to the age- and gender-specific average. It serves as a guide and is not a medically standardized metric. The assessment ranges from very weak to exceptionally strong.
The calculation is based on a reference table of average grip strength values. For ages falling between two values listed in the table, the average is calculated using linear interpolation between the adjacent table entries. Optionally entered height and weight data slightly adjust the average value. Specifically, an adjustment of ±0.18 kg is applied for every centimeter of deviation from the average height, and ±0.07 kg for every kilogram of deviation from the average weight. If the non-dominant hand is selected, a reference value 7 percent lower is used. These adjustment factors are not derived directly from scientific studies, but were chosen as plausible heuristic approximations for this calculator.
The reference values used represent averages and serve as a general guide. Individual differences, variations in measuring devices and methods, as well as fitness levels can lead to differing results.
Grip strength can be measured using a dynamometer. Such devices can be purchased, and some sports medicine specialists and rehabilitation facilities also offer this type of measurement. Grip strength can be trained using a dedicated hand exerciser, which may also provide a rough estimate of grip strength. An advantage of grip strength training is that it can easily be performed almost anywhere and at any time and can be integrated into many everyday situations.
However, the fact that grip strength provides an indication of general health does not mean that training it in isolation, while neglecting other factors, is advisable. Grip strength is just one of many health-related aspects, and correlation does not imply causation.
