Simple calculator for the calories burned when climbing stairs. The calorie consumption when climbing stairs is normally higher than when walking uphill without stairs for the same height difference. The reason for this is that the movement sequence when climbing stairs is more complex and intense. The movement is less fluid and more leg muscles are active. The estimate assumes around 10 to 20 percent more energy is required for climbing stairs. In comparison to the calculator linked above, 30 percent more is assumed here, since a horizontal distance is also covered when climbing stairs, which is difficult to measure. Therefore, this cannot be entered, but is taken into account in the factor, which is therefore not in the middle but above the upper end of the estimate. The values for calorie consumption on an incline without stairs and when using stairs are given so that the values can be compared.
Example: a person weighing 80 kilograms (the total weight counts here, including clothing and luggage) climbs 20 meters up a flight of stairs - that's about the seventh floor in a high-rise building. This burns about 32 kilocalories. The same height difference over an incline without stairs would burn 25 kilocalories if you ignore the horizontal distance. However, if the incline is over 100 meters horizontal length, you can use the calorie-height calculator to calculate 31 kilocalories.
The calorie consumption when climbing stairs is only effectively higher if the incline without stairs is relatively steep. This is because on a flat incline you burn more calories through the distance covered than through the height difference. However, when climbing stairs you burn calories much faster at a normal walking pace.
