Calculate Friction

If you put an object on a straight plane and then slowly make that plane more and more sloping, the object will eventually start to slide down. The coefficient of friction can be calculated from the angle of the plane at which slipping begins and vice versa. Please enter the angle in degrees or the coefficient of friction, the other value will be calculated. The coefficient of friction is the tangent of the angle, so the angle is the arctangent of the coefficient of friction.

Plane angle: °
Coefficient of friction:

Example: the coefficient of friction of skis on snow is about 0.1. Therefore you need a nearly 6 degree steep slope to start without effort.

Physics commonly uses SI units. Here is a calculator to convert units.
