Photovoltaics - Amortization Time
Calculator for the payback period, until a photovoltaic system is amortized. The time is calculated from price and power of the system, yield factor and the electricity price paid on average. Example: a photovoltaic system with 8 kWp costs 10000 € (or $). With a yield factor of 1000 and an average sale price of 14 cents per kilowatt hour, the system has amortized in barely 9 years.
Amortization or payback is a measure of economic viability. For many people and organizations, it is the primary reason for deciding to install a photovoltaic system. Other reasons, such as idealism and the desire to do something good for the environment and climate, play a role for some people, but not at all for others. Financial reasons, on the other hand, are probably relevant for everyone.
To calculate the amortization period precisely in advance, one would need to know the electricity prices for that period, which, of course, is generally not the case. Therefore, this calculation is an estimate unless it refers to the past and these values are known. For some people and companies, especially energy-intensive firms, rising electricity prices represent a future risk that a photovoltaic system can significantly mitigate. This risk reduction by reducing dependence is another financial aspect of such an investment.
The rapid increase in the number of photovoltaic systems since the beginning of the millennium is a clear sign that such systems are often economically viable. Initially, this was only possible with subsidies, but these have since declined significantly, as have the investment costs for PV systems. Subsidies have disappeared entirely in some cases, yet photovoltaics continues to expand.
