Interval Calculator

Calculates the interval, the distance from one note to another. Please change one or two values and click the according button to calculate. Both notes may be not more than 12 half-steps (one octave) apart, to allow a calculation.
The note notation used here is the common notation in the english language. Other languages have different notations, e.g. in German, C2 is C, C3 is c, C4 is c', C5 is c'' and so on.

The intervals cover a certain amount of semi-steps. These are:

Minor second: 1
Major second: 2
Minor third: 3
Major third: 4
Fourth: 5
Tritone: 6
Fifth: 7
Minor sixth: 8
Major sixth: 9
Minor seventh: 10
Major seventh: 11
Octave: 12

A semi-step of 0, so the same note again, is called unison.

Examples: there is a fifth between C3 and G3. A tritone away from C2, the lower note, is (F#2) F2 sharp or (Gb2) G2 flat. From A3 to G4 it is a minor seventh.

The range of notes to choose from extends over three octaves from C2 to B4. If you want to calculate in higher or lower octaves, it is advisable to start with the notes C3 to B3 and then convert these and the results to the respective octaves. According to the above example from A3 to G4 it is also a minor seventh from A4 to G5.

An interval is a range of values that are on an ordered scale. Mathematically, an interval is something like [2;4] for the values from 2 to 4 with the values 2 and 4 included, or ]2;4[, where the values 2 and 4 themselves are not included. An interval in music is always the equivalent of [x;y]. Notes are ordered, the respective notes C3, C#3, D3, D#3, E3, F3, F#3, G3, G#3, A3, A#3, B3 can be understood as natural numbers. These notes as an example are calculated internally with the values 28, 29, 30, ..., according to their number on a piano. The scale here begins with C2, which has the value 16 and ends with B4, which has the value 51.
