Converting international units and micrograms for vitamin D3. Vitamin D3, often just called vitamin D, chemical name cholecalciferol, is a fat-soluble vitamin. It is found only in small amounts in the diet and is formed by people exposing their skin to direct sunlight. Because many people don't get enough sun, it's often used as a dietary supplement. Whether and for whom this can be useful is not the subject of this page, on this get medical advice.
Vitamin D3 is measured either in international units (IU) or in micrograms (μg), with one international unit equaling 0.025 micrograms. One μg (millionth of a gram) is 40 IU. These values can be converted into one another here. Please fill in one value to calculate the other.
Example: 800 international units of vitamin D3 correspond to 20 micrograms.
Light skin produces more vitamin D3 than dark skin. However, people with lighter skin are more sensitive to the sun's rays and are more likely to get sunburn or even skin cancer. Sun protection should not be neglected compared to vitamin D intake and the right balance should be found. Foods with a relatively high vitamin D3 content are fatty fish, offal and eggs. Cod liver oil contains a particularly high amount. However, these foods also contain such small amounts of vitamin D3 that it is hardly possible to obtain enough this way. Therefore, vitamin D3 is probably the food component for which a dietary supplement can be most useful.
Another form of vitamin D is ergocalciferol, vitamin D2. However, this is probably half as effective as D3 at best when taken in comparable quantities. For other vitamins see international units vitamins.
