Calculator Amount per Time of a Drip
Calculates the time it takes for a certain volume to run through the drip from the drip speed. One drop in medicine is calculated as a twentieth of a milliliter, 20 drops are one milliliter, 20,000 drops are one liter. The drip is usually designed to have this drop size. Please enter a value in three of the four lines, the fourth value will be calculated.
Example: if two drops run through the drip in three seconds, then it takes four hours and ten minutes for 500 milliliters (half a liter) to run through.
A drip is used to give infusions. A liquid is usually introduced into the body via a needle and a tube, often into a vein. This liquid is given to the body at a regular rate over a certain period of time. In contrast to oral medication, i.e. medication taken by mouth, infusions must be given by medical professionals. An isotonic saline solution, which has a similar mineral composition to blood, is usually used as a carrier solution for medication. This can also be given in pure form in the case of dehydration. In addition to medicine, food in the form of nutrient solutions can also be in via a drip.
The appropriate drip rate is determined from the information on the medication or infusion liquid and from the experience of the doctors and nurses who prescribe and monitor the infusion. As with all medical topics, laypeople should be cautious about making their own decisions compared to experts. However, you can help monitor the drip rate yourself and let them know if it changes unexpectedly or if the drip has emptied.
This is no medical advice.
