Example: a sheet with two meters in length, one meter in width and one centimeter in height has a volume of 20 liters. When made of iron, its mass is 158 kilograms.

Mass is often colloquially referred to as weight, both are often given in kilograms. The correct unit for weight force would be newton. Mass and weight force are proportional to each other as long as we remain on earth.

Such a plate in the shape of a cuboid is particularly easy to calculate, since its volume is length times width times height. The more complicated the shapes are, the more difficult it is to calculate the volume. Density is the mass per volume, so the mass is easily obtained by multiplying the volume and the average density, since the volume cancels out. In addition, cuboids of the same size can be placed next to and on top of each other without a gap; this is called tiling. This also makes calculations often much easier.
The density does not necessarily have to be constant, since an average value is used for calculations. Material is often unevenly distributed. However, for useful applications, a reasonably homogeneous density distribution is required in many cases. The materials specified here are air, water, stone and glass, as well as iron. Of course there are many more materials, and the densities of homogeneous materials are easy to determine. However, if you take a material like soil, there are very different values ​​depending on its composition. Stone and glass have roughly the same density, although there are of course many different types of rock and they have very different densities. Of course you can't make plates out of air and water, but you can easily calculate their mass in cuboid-shaped spaces.
