Material Calculator - Extrapolate Volume and Mass

A mass of a substance has a certain volume. Here the mass for a different volume or the volume for a different mass can be calculated from that. Please enter three values, usually the first two and another one, but you can also enter any other three. Choose a unit and press Calculate.

Known volume:

Extrapolated volume:
Extrapolated mass:

Results will be rounded to three decimal places. When a calculated value is 0, change the units.

Example: 7.874 gramms of iron have a volume of 1 cubic centimeter. So 3 liters of iron have a mass of 23.622 kilogramms.

Volume and mass are connected to each other via density, with density being the mass per volume. If temperature and pressure conditions remain constant, the density of a substance does not change. Therefore, if the volume or mass of a substance changes, while maintaining the density, the other quantity changes by exactly the same amount. A substance can consist of several different materials, as long as their composition remains unchanged. This also applies, of course, to the proportion of any enclosed air. Therefore, if a part from a heterogeneous mass should be removed, it has to be made sure that this part has the same composition as the whole if the density should be maintained and so this calculation can be done.
However, volume is a three-dimensional unit; it is calculated from the three dimensions of space: length, width, and height. A change in volume results in a change in length by the cube root of the changed value, so changes in volume are often misjudged due to lack of experience. For example, if the volume and thus the mass double and the shape stays similar, the length, width and height only change by a factor of 1.26 each. For this calculation, see Multiple Area and Volume.
