If other heating methods are used, this value decreases accordingly. The calorific value of wood is approximately 2000 for hardwood and 1600 for softwood; this is an average value. The efficiency of the stove is a crucial factor. Open fireplaces, for example, have very poor efficiency. If you don't know the efficiency, you can enter average values from the drop-down list. The amount of wood needed per year is calculated from these values using the formula: Basic value * Room size * Heating hours / (1000 * Calorific value * Efficiency). This is a rough calculation, the result is an estimate, not an absolute value.
Ideally, for heating with wood, you need a well-insulated house and a highly efficient stove. The wood should be dry. Legal regulations must be observed, these can vary regionally.
When heating with wood, incomplete combustion produces fine dust, which can be hazardous to health. Open fireplaces perform worst in this regard, while tiled stoves are among the best, surpassed only by pellet stoves and wood-burning boilers with filters. Damp wood and frequent firing result in poorer emissions. Fine dust is not only unhealthy but also a sign of energy waste.
