Velocity Calculator

Calculate the velocity from distance and time, with different units. The velocity or speed tells, which distance is covered in which time. The formula for the velocity is v=d/t, its SI-unit is m/s, meter per second. Please enter two of the three values for distance, time and velocity to calculate the third value.

Distance d:

Time t:

Velocity v:

Example: if you make one kilometer in 2 minutes, then you have an average speed of 30 kilometers per hour, which is about 18.64 miles per hour. In meters per second, the value is 8.33, as 2 minutes have 120 seconds and 1000 divided by 120 gives that result.

SI units are the most commonly used internationally, among other things to avoid misunderstandings in communication. In the case of velocity or speed, this is meters per second, m/s, this unit is often used in the field of science and technology. However, the more common unit in everyday life, especially when moving on foot, by bike, car, train, or other vehicles, is kilometers per hour, km/h. This unit is also more intuitive, as we often move over distances that last longer than a few seconds and are further than a few meters. One meter per second corresponds to 3.6 kilometers per hour. The unit miles per hour, mph, is the one commonly used in the Anglo-American world, one mile per hour corresponds to 1.60934 kilometers per hour, corresponding to the ratio of mile to kilometer.
The speed is often not constant, but changes during the course of the journey. In this case, the speed specified is an average value. Of course, larger fluctuations are to be expected over a longer period of time. But this is not always the case. For example, in traffic in an inner city, speed generally fluctuates much more than on a long-distance journey.
