Physical density is a measure of mass per volume. Similarly, there are colloquially two types of energy density: energy per volume and energy per mass. Energy per volume is the actual energy density, energy per mass is the specific energy, which is also often referred to as energy density. Especially with rechargeable batteries, energy density often means the specific energy. You then compare how many batteries with a certain energy content weigh, with weight being a colloquial synonym for mass. With both types of energy density, it is important to also state what it refers to: with a rechargeable battery, for example, to the individual cells, to the entire battery, or to the complete battery pack, including mounting and everything else. The energy density is of course higher for the individual cells. But the cells have to be built into something, and that weighs something without being able to store energy itself. If you compare values ​​with each other, they must therefore have been measured for similar parts. For example, the energy density of lithium-ion batteries is around 200 watt hours per kilogram (Wh/kg) for individual cells. The entire battery pack of the VW ID.3 with 58 kilowatt hours of usable battery capacity weighs around 500 kilograms, which corresponds to an energy density of 116 Wh/kg.
