Convert Latitudes and Longitudes into Distance
Here, an angular measurement on Earth can be converted into kilometers and miles. A point's location on Earth is expressed using two angular coordinates, the first is latitude, the second is longitude. Latitude represents the angular distance from the Equator, while longitude represents the angular distance from the Prime Meridian passing through Greenwich, near London, England. This tool allows for the calculation of distances along lines of latitude (north or south) and longitude (east or west). Calculating distance involving both directions is more complicated, for this see distance between two points.
The distance in degrees for latitude is calculated using the Earth's radius of meridian curvature. This value accounts for the Earth's slight oblateness and varies slightly depending on the latitude. The distance is determined by the formula: distance = angle × radius of meridian curvature.
For the distance between lines of longitude, the radius of the parallel of latitude (see rotational radius) at the specific latitude is used. This radius decreases as the distance from the equator increases. The distance is determined by the formula: distance = angle × radius of the parallel.
