Convert Billion and Milliard
Calculator for the short scale numbers billion and trillion and the long scale numbers milliard and billion. Short scale is used in modern English, long scale in previous British English and in some other languages like German. The confusion of billion short scale and billion long scale is a common source for translation errors.
Example: 2 billion long scale is 2 trillion short scale. The mathematical power notation is 2 * 1012.
Germany, most of Central and Western Europe, and most of Spanish-speaking South America use the so-called long scale, which has -iard. English-speaking countries such as the USA, Great Britain and Australia, as well as Brazil, Russia and large parts of Africa use the short scale without these terms. In Great Britain the long scale was common until the 1970s, so you can find terms like milliard in older publications. In contrast, France switched to the long scale in 1961, having previously mostly used the short scale. So terms like billion in older French texts are difficult to interpret and depend on the context. In Canada, South Africa and Namibia both systems are in use. India, China and large parts of Southeast Asia use other systems.
Beyond the trilliard on the long scale and the trillion on the short scale (whereas the trilliard in long is a billion (milliard) times the trillion in short), such number names are rarely used, probably because quadrillion looks and sounds unusual. The most common method for describing very large numbers is prefixes such as mega, giga, tera and so on, or the power notation mentioned above, which also leads to much higher ranges. These two types have the advantage that they are unambiguous, so there is no risk of confusion with the names. The power notation is the best way to recognize which orders of magnitude you are dealing with.
