Concentration

Calculator for the concentration of a substance in a solvent or in a mixture. The concentration is a proportion of a certain thing in the whole, it is usually given as a percentage. For example, a 50 percent concentration means half consists of the substance in question and the other half consists of the other ingredients.
Please enter two values, the other two values will be calculated.

Total amount:
Substance (solvate):
Solvent:
Concentration in %:

Examples: 800 milliliters of a 60 percent solution contains 480 milliliters of solvate and 320 ml of solvent. 13 percent alcohol by volume in a 750 milliliter bottle of wine corresponds to 97.5 milliliters of alcohol and 652.5 milliliters of other ingredients, with this other being mostly but not entirely water.

Chemical concentration refers to volume unless otherwise stated. Other possible types are molar concentration or mass concentration. For this calculator, it does not matter which type of concentration is meant, as it does not require units, so you can choose them as you wish. Just note that the units of the first three input fields are the same and the type of concentration refers to these units. In the case of milliliters, this is volume concentration, as liters are a unit of volume.

The second of the examples above already indicates that the term concentration is known and used far beyond chemistry. Without context, concentration is often used to mean a focused thought process. The meaning of these two variants is similar; the higher the concentration, the higher the proportion of relevant thoughts in one case, and the higher the proportion of relevant materials in the other, i.e. in both cases the proportion of what is at stake. The term comes from French and was coined in the 17th century, but the exact meaning it had first is uncertain. It is derived from centrum, meaning center, and con, common, meaning directed toward a common center.

No responsibility is taken for the correctness of this information.
