Burn Time: Candles | Mixed Wax | Rectangular candles

Burn Time and Weight of Mixed Wax Candles - Calculator

Calculate, how long a candle made of a mix of paraffin wax, stearin and Beeswax can burn and how much the weight is. Apart from the wax mix, the same assumptions are made as with candles from one type of wax: cylindrical, no draining, complete burning, normal wick length, no wind. A homogeneous wax mixture is assumed, which means that the waxes are distributed even in the candle. Weight and burn time are calculated from the proportionate values of the appropriate waxes. The parts of the waxes are calculated in mass percent.

Paraffin wax: %
Stearin: %
Beeswax: %
Length (height): cm
Diameter: cm
Weigth (mass): g

Approximate burn time: h min

Please enter the percentage of two of the three types of wax as well as length and diameter or weight of the candle. The approximate burn time will be calculated.

Example: A typical wax mixture is 70 percent paraffin wax, 20 percent stearin, and 10 percent beeswax. If a round candle made from this mixture is 10 centimeters high and has a diameter of 3 centimeters, it weighs 64.4 grams. Physically correct, its mass is 64.4 grams. The approximate burning time is then 9 hours and 16 minutes, assuming it burns evenly to the end and no wax is lost through overflow. While this won't happen exactly in reality, the estimate is still useful.

This specific blend of the three waxes is based on the following principles: Paraffin wax is the cheapest and is therefore usually used in the largest quantity. However, it produces soot and is also bad for the environment. It is derived from petroleum. Stearin increases the hardness and burning time of the candle and does produce less soot. It is plant-based and often made from palm oil. Beeswax is the most expensive and is therefore used sparingly in most candles. However, it gives off a pleasant honey scent, which is often desirable. It produces little soot and is environmentally friendly.

These calculations apply to candles up to approximately 3 centimeters in diameter. With a larger diameter, candles burn faster per mass and more unpredictably.
