Divide Range of Values into Steps
Calculator for the range of steps when dividing values from ... to ... by a number. Please specify the range of values and the number of steps. A table with the span for each step will be output.
Due to a rounding, the last step can be larger or smaller than the previous steps. If this is not wanted, increasing the number of decimal places can be a solution. However, this doesn't work for some fractions, such as thirds.
Examples: If you want to divide the range from 1 to 10 into four equal sections, you get the individual steps from 1 to 3.25, from 3.25 to 5.5, from 5.5 to 7.75, and finally from 7.5 to 10. Rounding to two decimal places works out because the difference between the lowest and highest values is 9, and 9 divided by 4 equals 2.25, which has two decimal places. However, if you only want integer numbers as intermediate steps, which means those with zero decimal places, you get steps from 1 to 3, from 3 to 5, from 5 to 7, and from 7 to 10. So the last step is one larger than the previous ones in this case.
If you want to divide the range from 1 to 5 into three parts, the steps, as decimal fractions with a limited number of decimal places, will never be the same size, because one-third cannot be written out as a decimal fraction. However, the more decimal places there are, the smaller the difference between the last step and the previous ones becomes.
The mathematical calculation is as follows: Step size = (End value - Start value) / Number of steps. Step 1: from Start value to Start value + Step size; Step 2: from Start value + Step size to Start value + 2 * Step size; Step 3: from Start value + 2 * Step size to Start value + 3 * Step size; and so on, according to the number of steps.
