Convert Number in Percent

Calculator for the conversion of the amount in percent. Please enter the values of multiple amounts, the percentual values and the total sum Σ will be calculated.

Example: if you have a mixture of 36 parts of substance A and 52 parts of substance B, then the percentual share of substance A is about 41 percent, of substance B about 59 percent.

The calculation procedure is as follows. First, the values of all individual amounts are added together. Their sum is displayed and set to 100 percent. Now, for each individual amount, the value is divided by the total sum and multiplied by 100 percent. The result is the percentage of that amount relative to the total. These individual percentage values are displayed in the right-hand column. Σ, the capital Greek letter Sigma, is used in mathematics as the symbol for sum.

Expressing values as percentages rather than absolute values offers the advantage of good comparability and clarity. Percentages are easy to understand intuitively. However, they contain less information than absolute values because they no longer convey the order of magnitude. Therefore, it is often useful to provide both percentages and absolute values, or at least the total of the latter. From the total and the percentages (i.e., relative proportions), the size of the absolute proportions can then be calculated.

An example of where such a calculation is performed is in elections. To avoid working with very large numbers, let's take the mayoral election in a small town. Of the valid votes, 5735 go to candidate A, 3971 to candidate B, and 1728 to candidate C. These values are purely invented. This gives us 11434 valid votes. Candidate A just barely has an absolute majority with 50.16 percent, candidate B receives 34.73 percent, and candidate C 15.11 percent.
