Gauge and water level calculator

Calculates the water level from the zero level and the gauge level. The gauge indicates the water level of rivers and other bodies of water and is often mentioned at high tide. The calculation is very simple, the water level is the sum of the zero level and the gauge. The zero level is determined separately for each measuring point, it is below the lowest water level measured over a long period of time so that the gauge does not have negative values.
Please enter two values, the third value will be calculated.

Zero level:
Gauge:
Water level:

Example: If the zero level is 180 centimeters and the gauge is 35, then the water level is 215 centimeters. So it is really only these two values added together, a very simple calculation.

A water level that is too low, as caused by drought, can make shipping difficult or even impossible. This is also problematic for hydroelectric power stations, as less water also means less water pressure, which reduces or prevents electricity generation. Last but not least, nature also suffers from too little water, which all living things need to survive.
The water level is limited by the upper edge of the water body. If this is exceeded, the water body overflows and adjacent areas are flooded. The reason for flooding is heavy precipitation, either immediately due to heavy or prolonged rain, or delayed due to previous heavy snowfalls. This often occurs in the mountains, and the subsequent snowmelt when it gets warmer again causes huge masses of water to rush down into the valley in a short space of time. Global warming increases the risk of flooding, as warm air can absorb more water, which then leads to correspondingly heavier precipitation when it cools down. Flooding also hinders shipping and hydroelectric power stations.
